If you haven’t already began your Spring lawn care in Phoenix, April is the time to start so you can enjoy lush, green grass around your home or in your backyard for the Summer. Spring is the time to stop summer weeds in their tracks but spreading pre-emergence herbicide to stop weeds before they began to sprout. This will also help control crabgrass. For the best results, pre-emergence herbicides should be spread on your lawn as early as possible in the Spring so it has the longest period of time to work against weeds.

Spring is also time to begin fertilizing your lawn. A professional landscaper can test your lawn to tell you what you need to fertilize, since grass grows between an optimal pH balance. You will need to use fertilizer with lime to raise the pH if it too low or sulfur to lower the pH if it is too high.

If your lawn has already began to start growing, its time to dust off the lawn mower and begin mowing. You don’t want to let your lawn go early in Spring, as thatch can build up and ruin your lawn. Thatch is a layer of old, dead grass that can build up and prevent air, water and the needed nutrients from arriving to your lawn’s roots. Always remove thatch before the grass really starts to grow going into late Spring and Summer.

This is part two in a two part series on Spring Landscaping in Arizona. To read part one, click here.

Spring landscaping in Arizona can be one of your most rewarding home improvement projects. You and your landscaping company have unlimited options when it comes to showcasing your yard. You can enjoy the perfect temperatures, sunshine and turn your yard into a showcase of color. And spring presents no better time to design a yard with major impact for you and your neighbors to enjoy!

Shrubs. Another great choice for spring landscaping in Arizona is shrub plantings. Like trees, you have an abundance of options for colors and fragrance. Many of shrub options are hardy and can withstand intense sun and heat. And, shrubs are attractive additions to your yard whether they’re in bloom or not.

Succulents and Cacti. What spring landscaping in Arizona would not include native cacti? Almost every variety is low maintenance, tough and saves on water usage. And, some cacti produce stunning, elaborate flowers.

Color Combinations. During your planning stage, you should have thought about how each plant will look when it’s flowering and when it’s not. By carefully selecting which varieties will be located, you can have your different landscaping plant elements complement each other.

A few pairing examples for spring landscaping in Arizona that look great together include:

The golden flowers of Mexican Gold Poppy with the blue flowers of Arizona Lupine.

The golden flowers of Mexican Gold Poppy with the blue iridescent flowers of California or Desert Bluebells.

The red flowers of Baja Fairy Duster with the yellow flowers of Desert Marigold.

The green foliage and red flowers of the Ocotillo with the Purple Prickly Pears.

The red flowers of Red Hesperaloe with Yellow Lantana.

The lime-green foliage and trunk of Palo Brea tree with the purple flowers of the Chaparral Sage.

The yellow spikes of the Octopus Agave with the red flowers of Bougainvillea.

The above are examples of how you can think about striking contracts in your spring landscaping in Arizona.

You and your landscaping company have unlimited options when it comes to showcasing your yard. And spring landscaping in Arizona presents no better time to design a yard with major impact for you and your neighbors to enjoy!

Spring landscaping in Arizona can be one of your most rewarding home improvement projects. The crisp days of winter are in the past and the blistering hot days of summer are hopefully a ways off. You can enjoy the perfect temperatures, sunshine and turn your yard into a showcase of color!

The first step when preparing spring landscaping in Arizona is to plan carefully. It’s tempting to load up on the beautiful, lush plants at your favorite home improvement store. But, without the right planning, you could be throwing your money away. You need to know what to buy for each area of your yard to give plants the best chance of thriving through the harsh summer ahead.

So, make sure you plan before you end up with a hodge-podge of ground cover, shrubs, flowers, trees and more. Step back and look at the big picture. Think about what you want your whole outside to look like. Then, break your outside space into pieces to plan the exact placement of landscaping elements.

Proper planning takes time. You need to explore the huge variety of landscaping options. And you must research what plants will do best in various locations and conditions.

If you don’t have the time, energy or desire to undertake this project, you might consider getting professional help. You could hire a local landscaping company to provide the necessary expertise. An experienced landscaper will be able to present tons of options. They’ll also know what and where to plant in your space.

Ideas for Spring Landscaping in Arizona

Flowering Blubs. You also need to think about the months ahead and what you want landscaping-wise. Spring landscaping in Arizona can impact your summer, fall and winter foliage. For example, if you want flowers in the fall, you’ll need to plant bulbs in the spring. Along those same lines, you’ll need to plant bulbs in the fall if you want certain types of spring flowers.

Flowering Trees. One way to make a major landscaping impact is through flowering trees. By including trees that produce magnificent color in spring landscaping in Arizona, you can change the entire look of your home during blooming times.

When you plant these trees in spring, you give them time to establish before the scorching summer heat. And, they get their roots well established before a cold snap in winter. Although you may have to wait a year to experience the spectacular color display, it will be well worth it when spring rolls around the following year. Plant fragrant, flowering trees and you get an added bonus.

In part two of this series on spring landscaping in Arizona we will discuss landscaping shrubs, succulents and cacti. For more information on landscaping your yard for spring, contact Corona Landscape today.

Tempe landscaping company, Corona Landscape, offers several suggestions for homeowners to adequately prepare for their spring landscaping needs. Since the threat of frost has likely passed, homeowners should focus on cutting back some of their frost damaged plants beginning in now to mid March. The goal is to prepare plant life for the upcoming growing season.

For example, homeowners can prune some grasses and deciduous trees right now. Ornamental grasses such as certain Muhlenbergia species or grama grasses can be cut back to the ground to rejuvenate. On the other hand, deer grass should be left alone. Spent stalks of aloes, agaves and other succulents can be removed at this time as well. In fact, homeowners should focus on a general yard and plant cleanup at this time.

“The warmer weather brings an urge to get outside and start doing yard work,” said Ed Bambauer, owner of Corona Landscape. “Mid-February through March is the perfect time for planting, trimming and cutting back plants to promote new spring growth.”

Homeowners with citrus trees can start to pick the fruit during March. Allowing fruit to drop to the ground should be avoided. Downed citrus allows fruit to rot quicker and attracts roof rats. Any excess fruit can be taken to Valley food banks. After picking fruit, citrus trees should be fertilized beginning in mid-February.

In addition, the homeowner needs to water citrus trees thoroughly before and after fertilization. They should also water all plants, including wildflowers at this time since rainfall has been somewhat scarce over the past winter months.

The February-March time frame is also when homeowners need to treat weeds. Homeowners can either pull weeds by hand or use post-emergent for weeds in granite areas. Grass areas need to be treated for weeds as well. A selective weed killer needs to be used in the lawn.

Finally, March is a perfect time to get an irrigation tune-up. Replacing batteries in the controller and checking for leaks is part of a basic maintenance program. Homeowners should also re-bury any lines that may have surfaced.

By following a few basic tips for Spring landscaping, homeowners will be able to enjoy a beautiful, lush yard in the months ahead.

We’ve been discussing recently the in and outs around Spring lawn care, but we haven’t talked much about the tools needed to get the job done. You can of course, hire a Tempe landscaping company to do all the hard work for you, or you can run out to the nearest hardware store and pick up all the tools you need to get your own lawn ready for Spring. You might think you are saving some money doing it on your own, but if you need to purchase all the tools to do the job correctly, you might soon realize it is not only easier to hire a Tempe landscaping company, it can be cheaper too.

Some of the tools needed for your Tempe landscaping manicure are:

Axes, picks and sledgehammers to remove tree stumps or any wood debris.

Forks, hoes, scoops, shovels and rakes

Turf tools such as cultivators, edgers and grass hooks

Hand garden tools such as weeders

Pruning and trimming tools like hedge shears, lopping shears, bow and pruning saws

Vegetable hooks or fruit pickers for produce-bearing trees and plants

Large trash cans and bags for debris

Gloves, protective wear and masks

Lawn mower (if you happen to have grass in the desert)

As you can see, there are quite a number of tools needed to properly and safely manicure a lawn and the cost of tools adds up fast. You can use this list as a guide to your Spring shopping for lawn care, or contact us if you’d like a quote on what we can do for your lawn this Spring.

This is the final part in a two part series. To read part one, click here.

Arizona does not see much of a winter, but with spring around the corner it is time to lock down a Gilbert landscaper for spring lawn preparation. Before temperatures begin to climb back up into triple digits, it is important to remember that proper spring lawn care can have a big impact on your lawn and landscaping around your home in the summer. Many lawns require professional Gilbert landscaper services such as fertilizing, aerating and seeding.

If your pre-winter beautiful lawn has turned into patches of yellow and brown, then it is best to hire a Gilbert landscaper to reseed your lawn where it has bare spots and thin areas. This is done by aerating the lawn, removing any thatch with a specialized thatch rake and adding a light dose of fertilizer. Heavy fertilization typically is not needed in the spring, and adding extra fertilizer at this point will not help the lawn’s root system. That is something that is typically done in the fall that helps with spring lawn preparation.

Nearly every lawn will require aeration at least once per year, which can aid in the growth of the lawn’s root system. You can often find at-home aeration products such as walking shoes with spikes, but the best aeration that your lawn could receive is from a professional Gilbert landscaper that has a commercial aerator. An easy way to check your lawn to see if needs aeration is to take a screwdriver and attempt to press it into the ground. If it won’t go into the soil or it is difficult to press in, you know your lawn needs to be aerated by a Gilbert landscaper.

It is a good idea to consult with a Gilbert landscaper if you have any questions about your lawn or landscaping needs. If you are considering a professional landscaping and lawn company, get at least two estimates, remember to ask any important questions upfront and feel comfortable with the company you choose based on their ability to complete your Gilbert landscaping needs the first time around.

Fertilizing – Adding organic or inorganic material that is added to the lawn’s soil to supply the required nutrients and minerals that is essential for proper lawn growth.

Aerating – Adds “air gaps” to the soil, improves drainage, allows for the absorption of the fertilizer and allows new grass seeds to directly contact the soil.

Seeding – Required to start a new lawn or as an alternative to laying sod, it is the least expensive way to transform your soil into a beautiful lawn.

You might have left your lawn care slide a little over the winter months and one of the first things that should be done by a Gilbert landscaper in early spring is removing any debris that has accumulated over the past few winter months. The early spring months in March or April is a great time to start seeding new lawns due to the favorable weather conditions, as long as the triple-digit heat has not yet set in.

In part two of this post, we will continue to discuss how a Gilbert landscaper can prep your lawn in the spring for a beautiful landscape in the summer. Contact Corona Landscape today for all of your spring lawn care needs.

Tempe landscaping company, Corona Landscape, has outlined several suggestions for winter landscaping. At this time of year, homeowners need to cover sensitive plants at night, fertilize over-seeded lawns, and apply pre-emergent weed control.

“Winter maintenance is every bit as important if you want to have a healthy, great-looking landscaping all year-round,” said Ed Bambauer, owner of Corona Landscape. “Cold weather requires you do some special things to protect your lawn and plants so they’ll return healthy in the spring.”

In Maricopa County, the average first frost date varies from November 21 to December 12; and the last frost date ranges from February 7 to April 3. Although frost-sensitive plants should be covered when temperatures drop, homeowners should be careful not to over-protect plants.

Also, homeowners who have over-seeded their lawns with ryegrass to keep their grass green during the winter months need to fertilize. By applying a thin layer of organic fertilizer each winter month, homeowners can add appropriate nutrients to insure healthy growth.

Finally, landscape maintenance usually requires regular weed control. One of the most effective ways to control weeds is to apply pre-emergent herbicide that prevents unwanted growth. Pre-emergent works best when applied at appropriate intervals.

By following these simple tips, Arizona homeowners can help create and maintain a healthy winter landscape that will transition well into next year’s growing season.
